Q&A WITH THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
What's your top tip for community expenses management, and why?
“I believe providing your management team with a resource tool like a spend-down worksheet is very helpful. However, I also believe that giving my managers the fl exibility to use whatever system they feel works for them leads to the most success. Not everyone is comfortable with an Excel spreadsheet. Some prefer to use the old-fashioned pen and paper and some like to keep their tallies written on a calendar. As long as the information lines up at the end of each month, it's successful!”

“Be engaged in the community. This will help build an understanding as to where your expenses are going. Work alongside your management team closely and train each specifi c department to maintain budget. Training and investing in your staff are key. By appropriately onboarding new team members, you are minimizing turnover. Increasing continuity of care and overall capitalizing on the opportunity to have a more positive and healthy job culture—this truly makes a diff erence.”

“I think the greatest tip I can off er for community expense management is to have your department head be in control of it. Have them manage it as they would their budget at home. Move stuff around. ‘What can I wait on? What do I need? Oh, I have some more money, what can I splurge on?’ Showing they are more in control of it will show them they also have to answer for it.”
