EDITOR'S LETTER

PRESIDENT & CEO James Balda jbalda@argentum.org

Preparation and Planning are Essential for Eff ective Community Management

In 2017, several regions of the United States faced instances of extreme weather that challenged emergency and disaster preparedness plans and procedures: Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria battered Texas and Florida, wildfi res ravaged homes and neighborhoods in California, and temperatures dropped to dangerous lows at the end of the year throughout the country. Senior living communities were not immune to many of the problems resulting from these disasters; however, leaders and professionals across the industry banded together to provide

support for each other. It is often during unexpected and impactful events like these that the true heart of an industry shines through. In this issue of Senior Living Executive, the Community Operations Issue, we address issues related to improving the effi ciency and eff ectiveness of various operations at a senior living community, including issues related to disaster preparedness and emergency management. You’ll read about crafting a comprehensive and strategic disaster plan including how and when to train employees on eff ective response, and what to do when it's time to put the plan into action (p.6). You’ll also learn about ways to mitigate risk at your community from establishing a risk management program to creating a consistent incident report procedure to updating handbooks, policies, and job descriptions (p.28). Additional topics in this issue include how to manage media during a crisis situation

(p.36), empowering front desk employees (p.18), an overview of mobile apps that improve connections with residents and families (p.42), and critical tips for assuring your community has entered into needed entertainment licensing agreements (p.40). In 2018, you’ll fi nd a new column in each issue entitled “From the Executive Director’s Desk” that will feature a community leader’s voice related to the issue’s core theme (p.46).

Many of the aforementioned topics will also be top of mind at the 2018 Argentum Senior Living Executive Conference, May 14-16, in San Diego, Calif. This year, the event will feature a new format with two unique learning paths, providing opportunities that meet each attendee’s goals, whether to gather ideas and strategies from dynamic speakers or engage with peers in solutions-oriented discussions. Be sure not to miss the Executive Director Leadership Institute, a multi-day conference program designed to give you actionable takeaways that can help you become a more eff ective leader (pre-registration is required). Please visit argentum.org/ conference for more details.
