the two guest rooms (each with wonderful views of the canal) have also been encouraging, with a third due to open in spring of 2024. In fact, Maison Jullian was selected among the ‘100 most beautiful guest houses in France’ in Figaro magazine — praise indeed.

EVENTS FOR ALL As a ‘multi-disciplinary venue’, the château off ers a varied programme of events throughout the year celebrating “artists who excel in their fi elds”, as well as the joys of nature – such as Magnolia Forever in June, when the said tree blooms spectacularly. The couple explain: “We wanted to bring the property back to life as it was with the Jullian family and, according to rediscovered press articles, they held festive receptions in its beautiful salons.” In addition, their ambition is to hold themed workshops at least once a quarter including ceramics, sculpture, fashion and yoga (bien-être complementing art de vivre), as well as food and wine tastings. As an example
of the latter, they held a ‘Burgundy wines and truffl es’ table d’hôte recently, which was a “resounding success”. The property can also be hired privately for family occasions like birthdays, weddings and christenings, and for corporate training too. So what advice would the
couple give others considering a similar venture? “Take the necessary time to think the project through up front and don’t rush into anything,” they say. But they’re clearly an excellent example of an eff ective partnership too, both with regard to the renovation and the subsequent management of the business, which they largely share. As far as the historical
research goes, there are just two mysteries remaining about Maison Jullian: the name of the architect and the exact date it was built. But one thing is for sure about the present, Candy and Charles have created a very special place from the folie Biterroise they bought, and have written a whole new chapter in its story. ■
