It is not practical to navigate the life raft. It is better to stay in the vicinity of the aircraft and be influenced by the winds and currents. However, if a favorable wind or current drifts to towards land, pull in the sea anchor to facilitate drift. Use paddles.
Apart from food supplies on board, fishing is the only other source of food. Bear in mind the following points:
• Do not eat any fish that are slimy or without scales, have sunken eyes, flabby skin or unpleasant odour Spiny fish, brightly colored or fish with puffed up appearance should be avoided since they may not only be poisonous to touch but also to eat
• Avoid sunburn by remaining covered • Protect eyes with glasses or shading
Sharks are scavengers, but have been known to attack swimmers and rafts etc Therefore, if a shark is sighted, take the following action: • Stop fishing • Remain still and keep quiet • Do not put anything overboard that could attract sharks
Drifting Ashore There will be signs of approaching land long before it is seen These include: • Flocks of birds Birds fly from land during the day and return back to land in the evening • An increase in floating debris or vegetation • Cumulus clouds that gather in one place in an otherwise clear sky, as they tend to gather above hills • A change in sea color eg by silt Use paddles to navigate around rocks reefs etc
