WHEN DO AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS AND INCIDENTS HAPPEN?


Data indicates 11% of all accidents and serious incidents occur during taxi. FARs require that during taxi, takeoff and landing all crewmembers and passengers must be belted and all food and beverage service items be properly stored. A serious fine results for noncompliance by passengers and/or crewmembers and insurance coverage may be voided.


Furthermore, it appears that 3.7% of business/executive aircraft accidents and serious incidents occur at altitude, at cruise, which accounts for 56% of the flight profile. Turbulence is one of the most common inflight emergency situations causing many injuries.


The most critical phase of flight for accidents and incidents is the landing phase. For executive aircraft operations, combining the approach and landing phases results in over 56% of the accidents and serious incidents occurring during this relatively short (14%) segment of the flight.

CRITICAL 11 MINUTES


Critical 11 Minutes: This refers to the three (3) minutes after takeoff and the eight (8) minutes prior to landing.


It is estimated that 80 percent of all plane crashes happen in these critical minutes of flight.
