The NATO Phonetic Alphabet was developed in the 1950s to be intelligible (and pronounceable) to all NATO allies in the heat of battle. The NATO Phonetic Alphabet is now widely used in business and telecommunications in Europe and North America. There are dozens of other standards in use throughout the world.

It is an enormous task to learn and retain the vast amount of information presented in Aircare FACTS Training. To facilitate memory and easy retrieval of important information, acronyms and other mnemonics are provided. Here are a few of the more important acronyms and alphacodes used in Aircare FACTS Training.


ACCOUNTS – An emergency procedure to follow after evacuating the aircraft.


Assess, Count survivors, Clear away from aircraft, Organize, Utilize resources,


Needs assessment, Triage, and Survival attitude. AED – Automatic External Defibrillator.


BART – Breathe, Attitude, Relax, Training and Good Judgment CAB – Circulation, Airway, Breathing CPR – CardioPulmonary Resuscitation. CRM – Crew Resource Management. EPT – Effective Performance Time


EZVictor – an crew signal to start an emergency evacuation.


FACTS – name of training program; originally, Flight Attendant and Cockpit crew Training System. Today, FACTS¨


is registered with the library of congress and


is known the world over as “crewmember emergency training.”


PASS – procedure of operating a fire extinguisher; Prepare the extinguisher, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze trigger, Spray the fire using side-to-side motion.


PREP – crew and passenger coordination procedure in a forewarned emergency evacuation; Prepare passengers, Ready the cabin, Evacuation plan review, Pilot-in- command report and final instructions.


SASS – a method of measuring one’s level of stress at any given time; Subjective Approximation of Stress Scale.


SUESDO – the subjects in a pre-departure passenger safety briefing;
