It’s estimated that extending the life of clothing by just nine months can cut carbon and water usage by up to 10%, while also reducing the staggering volume of clothing sent to landfill every year. School uniform brand Trutex has been supplying quality clothing for more than 150 years. Its ethos of ‘Made to Last’ means garments are often grown out of before they wear out, enabling uniforms to be handed on or passed down through families. As a carbon neutral business, reducing the amount of carbon and water used in production is also a key part of the Trutex sustainability strategy. The company’s new Re-vive line of blazers and
trousers is made from a durable and comfortable fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. The bottles are flaked before going through a process of de-polymerisation and re-polymerisation, melted into chips, spun into yarn and woven into a hard-wearing, quality fabric. Each Re-vive blazer saves around 36 plastic bottles from landfill sites and each pair of boys’ trousers saves 19 bottles. Over the past academic year, a total of 600,000 plastic bottles have been saved from landfill and recycled into Re-vive garments.

Composting is educational, practical and fun, and can reduce the carbon footprint of your school by converting green and food waste into nutrient- rich growing material. UK-based company Ridan designs environmentally friendly composting machines, with no power, water or other services required. All raw and cooked food waste can be effectively composted, including fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, fish and dairy products. As long as your school premises has some garden space or grounds, this allows you to recycle all of your food waste on site as soon as it has been discarded. During the composting process, energy is released, which heats the mixture and creates steam (much to the amusement of pupils!) The Ridan composting system ensures
conditions are just right to produce a healthy, nutritious compost that can be fed back into your plant pots, borders and gardens, or used for community projects. Ridan offers three sizes of composting machines, depending on how many litres of food waste are produced each week. The emerging compost should be matured for two to three months in a specialised bin, such as the Ridan maturation box. The system demonstrates a perfect solution to the dual problems of food waste disposal and soil depletion.
