SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION A


ccording to research carried out by the charity SEEd, there is a gap between what young people know, want and feel


about sustainability issues and what is currently provided in the classroom. Teachers have told the charity that they want to educate their pupils about sustainability, but many say they lack the skills and knowledge to do so. SEEd (Sustainability and


Environmental Education) aims to empower young people, school leaders and communities in making positive change that will help protect the earth’s resources and mitigate against pollution, waste and climate change. It runs several


SEEd has worked with Wellington College in Berkshire, an independent school for students aged 13 to 18, for the past five years. The college developed a whole- school approach for sustainability and used the Young Changemakers programme with Year 11 and 12 students. ‘The programme has let students be in charge of their own learning, understanding how systems work,’ says head of sustainability Ana Romero.

and mentoring to school pupils to help them develop their own sustainability projects. These have ranged from fashion recycling and aquaponics, to coming up with plastic-free alternatives to products used in their schools, creating a kitchen garden, and communicating with officials to promote wider change. ‘The young people we work with are


passionate about creating a more positive sustainable future,’ says SEEd


director Ann Finlayson. ‘Our programme empowers them to make a start and learn as they grow. We facilitate their journey and help them develop vital skills in communication, persuasion, working collaboratively and confidently.’ SEEd Changemakers is a four-month


programme on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) that supports adults in education build sustainability into their workplaces. SEEd mentors participants through their own action learning projects, with a focus on embedding transformative approaches to human, environmental and economic sustainability. The programme aims to build confidence and leadership; it covers how people learn and communicate, and how to influence others. One recent project has involved starting a new school with sustainability at its core. Changing Places is a programme


that mentors and supports the entire community surrounding a school to embed sustainable approaches, a concept developed with UNESCO.
