comes to commercial success, unlike in his native New Zealand where for many areas they are a vital part of the infrastructure.
But he believes that airports like Blackpool have an important and overlooked role in their local economies and more should be made of the regional connectivity they can deliver.
The neighbouring Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone is also on a growth journey. Its potentially game-changing Silicon Sands project is looking to attract major inward investment and create thousands of jobs through the creation of a data centre cluster.
Steve says: “The enterprise zone will play an important part in the financial success of the airport, we’re hard-wired together and Silicon Stand offers major opportunities.”
His family is steeped in aviation, with many members of his family working as cabin crew or pilots for Air New Zealand. And he recalls as a 12-year-old sitting on the roof of his home watching flights coming into the airport at Invercargill, a small town at the tip of South Island.
His career in aviation began in the early nineties with a corporate aircraft management
company, where he was responsible for aircraft sales and acquisitions. He says: “It was a fantastic break and I learned so much.”
And his extensive experience also includes aircraft management, remarketing and consultancy work, working with major companies such as Japan Airlines and Mitsubishi Corporation in Tokyo.
An impressive CV also includes a management role in a general aviation aircraft manufacturer where he learnt the processes, procedures and regulatory requirements involved turning 2,500 individual parts into an eight-seat aircraft.
Steve says: “I started in the aviation sector a while back and to be here doing this is fantastic. I’m loving it.”
Getting the job involved an extensive recruitment process and he says: “They weren’t looking for someone that had run an airport in the past, they wanted someone who could come in and work with the team to deliver a decade-long plan.
“Our shareholder is very supportive and has signed up to what we are looking to do here. Confidence is growing and we are delivering.”

DO THINGS REALLY MOVE QUICKLY
IN DIGITAL? I hear it all the time: “the problem with your industry is things move so quickly”.
I’ve been running Bespoke for more than 20 years and see the opposite.
The core principles today are just the same as 10 or 20 years ago:
• Understand your ideal customer so well that you know exactly what excites them
• Use simple, clear key messages, laser-focused on what matters to them
• Show that others like them are buying from you and loving it
• Run consistent, well-targeted ad campaigns. Keep showing up where it counts
• Have a website that converts. Fast, up-to-date, and designed to turn visitors into leads
• Build assets. Brand guidelines, an image library, and a video library are essential
• If your social media makes people feel they know, like, and trust you, you’re on the right path
Blackpool Airport STEVE’S TAKE ON LEADERSHIP What makes a good leader?
Integrity, it is the starting part. If you have integrity that will instil trust and in my opinion that creates engagement and motivation.
My dad taught me as a kid that you’ve got to be able to look yourself in the mirror in the morning.
He also taught me that if you don’t know what to do, do the right thing. He has been a big influence in my life.
What leaders have inspired you?
JFK. When you look at him in the 1960s as US President there was so much charisma around the guy. His speech about going to the Moon and, importantly, returning safely to Earth was enormously inspiring. He had that ability to motivate and get people to engage.
Gene Kranz, who was mission controller on
the Apollo space programme was also an inspiring figure. He is best known for directing the successful efforts by the Mission Control team to save the crew of Apollo 13.
His speech to his team after the Apollo 1 disaster which saw three astronauts die had a lasting impact. He told them, “From this day forward, Flight Control will be known by two words: ‘Tough” and “Competent’.” Those words were written on the blackboards at Mission Control and never erased.
What qualities does a leader need?
Empathy. You don’t know what is happening in other people’s lives or what is influencing their actions, good or bad, at that moment in time. You need to link that empathy with integrity and if you do, you’ll have a pretty good foundation.
It is also important to have passion for what you do. If you haven’t then don’t bother coming.
