INSIDE TRACK Write for Rights 2025
In November and December, the Write for Rights campaign returned for its 25th year.
Thanks to everyone who took part. As ever, activists’ creativity and dedication to the world’s biggest letter- writing campaign shone through. Supporters organised events in community halls, libraries, cafés, places of worship, schools and universities. These were brought to life with inspiring talks, live music, stalls and creative actions, from choirs to lantern-making.
The campaign also received strong support from MPs. Tom Gordon MP visited the Harrogate and Knaresborough group’s event, while Rachael Maskell MP and Lord Mayor Martin Rowley supported the York group’s Write for Rights stall.
These actions, repeated thousands of times around the world, send a loud and clear message: people facing injustice are not alone. Sonia Dahmani, who featured in this year’s campaign, was conditionally released on 27 November (see page 7) – a reminder of the power of collective action.
A global campaign report will be published soon, with statistics, updates from around the world and news on all the cases. You can also see how your campaigning helped make change happen in Good Moves (page 6), while Real Lives returns on page 30, so you can continue writing on behalf of people facing human rights abuses.
On the scene
The Islington and Hackney Amnesty group’s annual comedy night in November 2025 featured an all-women line-up to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Partnering with Amnesty’s Feminist Network, the event highlighted how the UK government should support women’s rights in Afghanistan. Six brilliant comedians – Rosie Wilby, Kyrah Gray, Anna Hale, Athena Kugblenu, Shazia Mirza and Michelle Shaughnessy (pictured) – entertained a sold-out crowd, raising £1,300.
