Morocco’s Hirak El-Rif protest leader Nasser Zefzafi is serving a long prison sentence after a flawed trial linked to his peaceful activism, amid Amnesty’s ongoing concerns about torture and medical neglect in prisons, and repression of dissent.


WHAT YOU CAN DO


• Demand the immediate release of Nasser Zefzafi. • Call for an independent investigation into allegations of torture and medical neglect of prisoners.


• Urge the Moroccan authorities to ensure fair trial standards and transparency.


• Ask the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to review and publicise the case, as well as call for corrective action.

Civil society leader Osman Kavala has been imprisoned since 2017 despite international court rulings ordering his release. His case symbolises the erosion of judicial independence and civil society freedoms in Türkiye.


WHAT YOU CAN DO


• Call on the Turkish government to immediately release Osman Kavala in compliance with European Court of Human Rights judgments.


• Urge Türkiye to respect judicial independence and the rule of law.


• Ask the Council of Europe and member states to pursue enforcement action and diplomatic pressure.


• Demand safeguards for civil society and human rights defenders in Türkiye.
