AMPLIFY SUMMIT AND AGM 2026

This year’s Amplify Summit and AGM will be in Brighton on 27-28 June. The event is a wonderful way to get involved in shaping the movement, writes Stuart Penny, vice chair of the Amnesty International UK Section.

When I joined Amnesty about 35 years ago, I didn’t plan to get involved in its governance. I just wanted to make the world a better place. Initially, I joined my local Luton and Dunstable group, before my activism journey took me to west Wales, where I am the treasurer of the Cardigan and North Pembrokeshire group.

After finishing my career in the NHS, I wanted to do more and thought my experience might be useful. I joined the Section Board in 2024, becoming one of the two vice-chairs. I also chair the Building a Powerful Movement sub-committee, which brings together various activism strands (groups, forums and networks). An important role of

the Board

is to engage effectively with the membership. Following an AGM decision in 2025, we’ve started a new initiative where every network, forum and local group region/nation has a named Board member responsible for working with them. The Board is also planning

to hold with members.

One of my jobs is to coordinate the implementation of AGM decisions. This means ensuring each decision has an allocated Board member to work with the resolution proposer and staff to ensure its implementation, where

possible. We now publish a monthly progress report on our website. One way every Amnesty member can get more involved is to attend our annual Amplify Summit and AGM. This year we will be at the University of Sussex in Brighton on 27-28 June, and it promises to be an inspiring mixture of education, discussion and debate.

Being a Board member has allowed me to play a small part in shaping the way Amnesty tackles the huge human rights challenges we face. I’ve also met great activists, inspiring staff and dedicated members. They make me feel immensely proud of what the Amnesty movement achieves, as well as hopeful for the future.
