Dear Gardening Friends,
By now, this year’s gardens will be a thing of the past and planning for the next one will soon begin. We are eager to show all of you what’s happening this season, so let’s get started!
Shumway’s is built on the tradition and allure of the tried-and-true heirlooms that have stood the test of time and managed to hang on or resurface again and again. We think you’ll be pleased with these old favorites, starting with Beans – who doesn’t love beans? Ideal Market (page 4), an early, stringless snap – sure to become a fam- ily favorite and Turkey Craw (page 3), a versatile bean that can be used as a snap or allowed to dry and use this winter in those yummy bean soups. Winter squash has gained popularity in the past several years and one of our personal favorites is Red Warty Thing (page 4) – it does double duty as an ornamental, yet it’s full of delicious flavor. We also found some great heirloom tomatoes…Kanner Hoell (page 4) and Missouri Pink Love Apple (Front Cover), both filled with old fashioned flavor and appeal – just like the good ol’ days!
01047 LAZY HOUSEWIFE POLE BEAN. The original heirloom from the 1800’s! One of the first beans to be com- pletely stringless – there is little work or time involved... thus resulting in its name. Use as a snap, shell or dry bean, depending on when you harvest. Medium-green pods are 4 to 5 in. long with distinctive shiny, white seeds. 75-80 days. (A) Pkt. (2 oz.) $2.95; 3+ $2.75 each; (N) 1/2 lb. $9.45; (P) 1 lb. $15.95; (P) 2 lb. $27.95; (P) 5 lb. $56.95.
Here’s some great new comers, as well. American Dream Sweet Corn (Front Cover) captured AAS honors and is deliciously sweet. Bearss Lime (page 3) – grown indoors or out, you’ll be rewarded with big, juicy fruits, and a quality that oftentimes is hard to find in supermarkets.
