A VOLUNTEER GROWS NEW
ROOTS
Debra Frey, one of the newest residents of Welsh Mountain Home, first connected with Landis Communities when she was an active volunteer at Landis Homes. “My aunt and uncle lived at Landis Homes, and my uncle was the one who got me interested in volunteering,” Deb says. “He thought I would be a good fit as a volunteer.”
D
eb first helped for one or two days per week, and decided to bump it to up to three days per week. “I really enjoyed being at Landis
Homes for a whole day. You would get lunch, and the food was always really good. Interacting with residents was my favorite part of the day,” explains Deb. “You were usually paired with one resident for the activity or event, so I was able to really get to know many of the people here.”
Once COVID-19 hit, Deb wasn’t able to continue volunteering, so she then used her volunteer’s heart to be the primary caregiver of her elderly parents in Lititz. Deb enjoyed this role and loved being with her parents, but it soon became evident that an adjustment was going to have to be made. Deb’s brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Mona Frey, work at Welsh Mountain Home, so it seemed like moving to Welsh Mountain Home would be a good option for her. Her parents chose to move to a retirement community.
“It was difficult for the first few days to get adjusted,” explains Deb. “But I was able to spend a whole day here and then decide if this was the place for me.” And that she did! Deb fit in quickly with the residents, and she was also able to bring some of her favorite things from home, including her cherished Civil War and WWII memorabilia.
Deb is now enjoying her independence and is looking forward to this new chapter of her life. She loves the activities and tasty food options at Welsh Mountain Home (especially the cinnamon apple oatmeal – a must-try), and she is also excited to begin volunteering at Landis Homes once more. “I love interacting with the residents and look forward to doing that again.”
