A FIRST TIME FOR FIRST PLACE

L

ouise had never set foot inside a gym prior to coming to Landis Homes. She and her husband, Clair, have lived at Landis Homes

for three years and they call the move the best decision they ever made.

Louise says she’s not a “fitness person” but her trainer started her out slow, and helped her feel comfortable with the machines, which were easy for her to use.

Before long, she tried the CyberCycle, in the hope of strengthening her legs and knees. Now, it’s a constant in her gym routine. “I’ll usually do the machines and then go ride the CyberCycle,” she says. “I’m probably way behind many people, but for me, this was a first.”

Louise and Clair visit the wellness center several times a week. Along with other Landis Homes residents and team members, they recently participated in a nationwide CyberCycle tournament, competing against teams across the country. Over a week’s time, the team rode during all hours of the day and night, totaling 1,800 miles and earning a first-place finish. Individually, Clair placed first nationwide, and Louise placed fourth and was the top female rider nationwide.

Clair and Louise

“I just feel like if I can do it, anyone can,” says Louise. “You don’t have to be a certain size, weight, or fitness level.”

And the changes Louise has felt from her trips to the gym have been valuable. Following a three-month trip to Florida last year, during which she exercised sparingly, she returned to Landis Homes and felt a noticeable difference from the strength and energy she normally enjoyed. She was excited to jump back into her exercise routine.

Landis Homes has provided a place for Louise and Clair to focus on living a healthy lifestyle and build lasting friendships with others.

“When you move to a retirement community, a lot of your stress is gone,” Clair says. “We’re far more active physically and mentally here than we were at our house.”

Clair and Louise are grateful for the opportunities that Landis Homes provides to use exercise equipment, maintain healthy habits and make meaningful social connections with those around them.
