CULTIVATING GROWTH

Growth Blossoms from

GRIEF

One minute, Terry was independent – the breadwinner for his family and an avid motorcycle rider. And the next minute, he was paralyzed from the waist down and had lost a leg, following a motorcycle accident at the age of 59.

Life changed dramatically. Everything that Terry and his wife had planned for their retirement years began to shift. Terry was unable to work, and his wife had to care for him. They had to sell their home and several of their possessions. Terry – who has a deep passion for antiques – owned several antique automobiles, and they had to sell those too.

“ T

here was a process of grieving I went through,” remembers Terry. He describes the anger,

And then he heard through the Lancaster Office of Aging about Landis Adult Day Services – an eight-hour window of time for adults to engage with each other and with their interests. Te goal of Adult Day Services, according to team member Leone Wagner, is for everyone to have a good day.

Staff work to determine the interests and talents of the clients and seek to find ways to enhance their lives.

“Coming to Adult Day, I met others who bring their own issues and experiences,” says Terry. “We are all here because something in our life has changed.”

It was that desire that also inspired Terry to begin volunteering for some of the programs. One of his favorite ways to get involved allows him to incorporate one of his greatest passions – antiques.

Recently, Landis Adult Day hosted its third “antiques roadshow” style program. With Terry at the helm, residents from Landis Homes also joined in and brought items to have them assessed. He uses this as an opportunity to encourage and learn.

Terry offers programs on a wide variety of topics such as automobiles, historical personalities and
