ULTIVATING A

A calm presence. A soothing voice. That is exactly what you need on the other end of the phone when you’re being trained to deploy to a natural disaster with the American Red Cross.

Spencer’s attributes served him well as an Executive Officer, U.S. Army Medical Material Center, Europe, until he retired as a major in 1994. LV continues to average 1,000 hours annually as a

Red Cross volunteer. And now, the calm, compassionate man has taken on the most important role of his life – caring for his wife, Susan, who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Landis Homes has a rich heritage of supporting volunteer efforts and service so, surrounded by that uplifting atmosphere, LV and Susan settled into their new home in August 2019. Tey moved all the way from Houston, Texas, based on the recommendation of their daughter who lives in downtown Lancaster.

“It was a big change,” says LV, but a worthwhile change – most importantly because Susan can now receive occupational and speech therapy from the comfort of their home. She can also get her lab work done right on the Landis Homes campus.

An invaluable aspect of their new home is the support group LV has joined – a group of 8-12 men who are all caregivers for their wives. Tey meet once a month to discuss how they are doing and how their wives are faring.

LV and Susan are both 67 and enjoy all of the opportunities Landis Homes has to offer such as the pool, the store, and the Garden Café.

“A lot of us are still active and we want to continue using our skills, talents, and abilities, regardless of our age,” said LV. “Our bodies may not be able to do everything, but our minds are still fresh. We’re still learning, and want to contribute.”

For a man who has been a volunteer for over fifteen years, the opportunity to connect with and encourage others is a high priority.

“We all want to make a contribution,” LV said. “At Landis Homes, you still have the ability to give compassionately to your fellow man, and to make a contribution.”
