At CardioSmart, we’re committed to supporting the relationship between you and your healthcare provider. We want to arm you with information so that you — together with your health team — can make care decisions that are right for you. It’s no secret that being physically active and following a healthy eating plan are vital to lowering your risk of a heart attack or a stroke. Maintaining a healthy weight is important, too, as is watching your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. In this issue, you’ll read about what it means to be heart-healthy and

how it helps. Understanding more about why it’s important may be just what you need to find the motivation to act. Quitting tobacco for good is one of the best things you can do for

your heart, and we give you tips on how to kick the habit. If you have diabetes, you’ll discover why you need to take extra care when it comes to your cardiovascular health. Also, you’ll learn that to reduce the amount of salt you consume, you’ll have to do more than hide the saltshaker. For added inspiration, we highlight two success stories of people who have overcome odds to live well with heart disease. They tell us in their own words how they stay positive and embrace life. It’s true that there are some heart risk factors you cannot change. For

example, you can’t pick your parents to alter your genetic risk, and your age is what it is. However, lifestyle habits within your reach can help protect your heart — and it’s never too late to start!
