Calling It Quits Smoking hurts
Whether you smoke, are exposed to secondhand smoke or are a nonsmoker, it’s important to become aware of the dangers of smoking. Smoking cigarettes not only affects your lungs, it harms nearly every organ in your body, including your heart. Smoking is the most preventable cause of early death in the U.S.
Just the Facts v Smoking is the second leading cause of cardiovascular disease, right behind high blood pressure.
v People who smoke are two to four times more likely to 22 develop heart disease or to have a stroke.
v Smokers are also up to six times more likely to suffer a heart attack than nonsmokers.
v Smoking can shave off at least a decade of life. v Secondhand smoke increases the risk of heart disease. v Social smoking increases the risk of heart disease. Even exposure to secondhand smoke — breathing in smoke-filled air from a nearby smoker — is dangerous. What’s more, electronic cigarettes (or e-cigarettes or e-cigs) are often thought to be a safer alternative. But recent data suggest they may not be safe, according to the U.S. Surgeon General.
