said. “Add to that the increase in urban development, population growth, and budgetary restrictions, and you have the perfect storm of circumstances that can result in the networks becoming overwhelmed.”

Addressing these issues requires innovative solutions and a proactive approach to ensure the network's resilience. Mark explained: “In recent years, we have seen our clients undertaking more monitoring and proactive maintenance work to mitigate against problems further down the line. This includes more frequent inspections utilising CCTV and proactive cleaning programmes.

“Monitoring sewer conditions can identify potential issues before they become major problems, and regular cleaning schedules, especially in known trouble spots, can prevent blockages caused by debris and sediment buildup.”

Mark emphasised the importance of economic viability: “Making this process economically viable requires a single- resolution approach with drainage teams carrying more equipment to complete a range of tasks in a single visit. At Rioned, our philosophy is very much aligned with the shifting needs of contractors, with new equipment developments focused on addressing these requirements.”

One notable innovation is the introduction of the RioCom 7.5t jetvac tanker. “We listened closely to customers when developing the new tanker unit in 2019, resulting in a multi-purpose jetting and suction unit with the capacity and features to undertake a wide range of tasks within a single visit. We now have nearly 200 of these units on the road with clients across the UK, and the feedback has been fantastic. We’ve even seen customers switch operations from jetting vans to the RioCom due to its

“The compact size of the unit also allows access to areas that would be difficult with larger tankers,” Mark explained, “whilst its jetting and suction capacities are largely comparable to much bigger jetvac units.”

The units are equipped with ample secure shuttered storage, enabling contractors to carry additional kit such as inspection cameras and detection equipment.

“Single-resolution has been the watchword in our approach,” Mark concluded. “And utility companies and
