MEET ME AT THE BAR A REVIEW OF THE UK HEALTH AND FITNESS MARKET
UK HEALTH AND FITNESS MARKET IN PEAK CONDITION
Welcome to Colliers International’s Review of the UK Health and Fitness Market 2019, an in-depth look at the gym sector nationwide, tracking the consumer trends that are influencing the market outlook.
Last year we published ‘Full Body Workout’ – a review of the Central London gym market. Our new report has broadened the scope, with a nationwide focus.
The UK’s private health and fitness market continues to grow; consisting of 5.8 million members nationally, it was estimated by Mintel to be worth £3.2 billion in 2018. In a recent consumer market survey undertaken by Colliers International, 45% of gym goers have increased their gym attendance since 2016, while 71% of people, who go to the gym, attend more than once a week.
Nevertheless, market penetration is still low, illustrating huge opportunities for growth, which is underpinned by a millennial generation who rank spending money on fitness and wellbeing above dining out and drinking. Similarly, the 50+ market is still
relatively untapped and offers steady growth opportunities for incremental spend at branded and family club offers.
With increasing numbers of people now favouring healthier lifestyles, consumers are willing to travel further and pay more for the right fitness facilities. As such, the gym should be considered a key element of placemaking in new office and residential developments.
The outlook for the UK’s fitness sector looks bright, supported by positive market trends and the growing strength of covenants.
Health and fitness clubs now occupy a stronger position than ever in the UK’s alternative investments asset market.
I hope you enjoy this latest market report which draws upon property data sourced by Colliers International and supported by data from a 3,000-person consumer survey.
