NURSING & PERSONAL CARE SECTORS

OCCUPANCY RATES The occupancy rate is calculated by the total number of service users at the time of inspection divided by the number of registered beds.

Our latest set of KPIs shows something of a reversal of the results published last year, with a small increase in nursing home occupancy levels but a static picture in the personal care sector, suggesting there may be some smoothing of past trends.

Occupancy levels in personal care homes have remained static across the year to H1 2018 at 91.8%, albeit showing a momentary increase to 92.0% in H2 2017. In the nursing sector, occupancy has increased 0.1 percentage points since H1 2017 to stand at 90.6%. These results contrast to the 0.1 percentage point increase seen in personal care and the 0.7 percentage point fall in nursing care seen in last year’s review (see Figure 1).

Whilst both sectors have generally seen rising occupancy since the low levels reported in late 2012 / early 2013, the nursing sector saw a marked fall in the year to H1 2017. For the last three periods, the nursing sector has recorded occupancy levels below the 10-year combined elderly sector average. This is in comparison to the personal care sector, where despite growth stalling over the last year, occupancy levels have been above the average for the last three and a half years.

Occupancy data over the past 10 years has shown a greater range in values for personal care and its generally lower acuity levels, reflecting the increasing choices available to service users as an alternative to residential care.
