What is a carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide, released into the atmosphere by a particular human activity, item, lifestyle, company, nation or the Earth as a whole. Everyone contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and everyone’s carbon footprint is different based on various aspects such as their habits and location. A carbon footprint is usually measured in tons of carbon dioxide emitted per year, along with other similar gases such as methane, nitrous oxide and various other greenhouse gases.
How is a carbon footprint calculated?
A lot of factors are taken into consideration when calculating greenhouse gases. Typically, a carbon footprint is calculated by estimating how much carbon dioxide and other types of greenhouse gases are emitted based on a person’s lifestyle or particular activity. Carbon footprints can also be calculated for certain events, businesses and even countries. Activities such as transportation methods, what foods a person consumes and how much energy is used at home or at work are taken into account when calculating a carbon footprint.
