Knowledge, Skills and Education
Boards and managers should make sure that they have the necessary knowledge and skills. Homeowners and especially board members should attend the Board Leadership Development Workshop offered by CAI-IL. The Board Leadership Development Workshop teaches boards how to communicate with association residents, hire qualified managers and service providers, develop enforceable rules and interpret governing documents.
Managers should continue to educate themselves so that they may learn about any changes to relevant laws and to learn about new best practices. Education should be robust and diverse so that the manager has the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively manage the needs of the community for which they provide services.
With the right knowledge, skills, and education, boards and managers will gain a better understanding of property management as an industry and of each other.
Value for Money
Good boards and managers understand their fiduciary responsibilities and utilize tools such as “requests for proposals” (RFP’s) to deliver upon this duty. An RFP helps managers and associations in many ways as it is a good method to solicit many bids from a number of vendors in a uniform manner. Each vendor receives concise and detailed descriptions of the services that are required and any ambiguity will be eliminated. The RFP process lets the vendors know that you are soliciting numerous bids and that the process is going to be competitive which will help to ensure that the association receives the best possible value for the services required.
By using these common tools boards and managers will find that their successes together will be common in many ways and not just reserved for the odd occasion here and there! Forget bronze, silver or gold – you’ll have a platinum team!
