Cuttlefish bones are used for a technique of casting where either two bones or two halves of a bone are sanded to give flat sides. a model is pressed into one flat side together with 3 or 4 locating pegs. The other bone (flat side down) is then pushed onto the model. The two halves are separated and the model removed. vents are scored (allows air to escape) between the model and outside edge of bone. a funneled hole is also cut (allows the molten metal to be poured into the cavity). The two halves are bound together with binding wire. molten metal is then poured into the hole and left to solidify. The mould is separated and the casting removed and allowed to cool.
