£49 million to encourage new engineers

Almost £49 million is being made available by the UK government to help encourage and train more engineers. Some £30 million of the money will fund employers to address specific shortages within engineering, while £18 million will be used for a new training facility within the Manufacturing Technology Centre, itself a part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult–aprogramme which works with companies to encourage innovation and new technology. Of the remaining money, £250,000 will support Tomorrow's Engineers for an employer engagement programme across the UK to inspire children, and £40,000 will be given to the Daphne Jackson Trust for new fellowships. A recent report by Engineering UK highlighted the lack of workers within the UK's sector – it predicts 2.74 million such positions will become available between 2010 and 2020. UK Business Secretary, Vince Cable, said: "Engineering has a vital

role to play in the future of UK industry. It is important that we act now to ensure businesses have access to the skills they require to enable them to grow."

Latest BSI welding standards

Are you up to date with the latest BSI welding standards? BS EN ISO 9606-1:2013 Qualification testing of welders, Fusion

Welding Steels. The ability of a welder to follow verbal or written instructions and verification of a person's skills are important factors in ensuring the quality of a welded product. This is a new British Standard that controls welder qualification testing/ welder coding. BS EN ISO 9606-1, which now supersedes BS EN 287-1:2011, provides a set of technical rules for a systematic qualification test of the welder and enables such qualifications to be uniformly accepted independently of the type of product, location and examiner/examining body. This newly revised standard is set to see a major boost to the Engineering and Manufacturing Industry, mainly as the expiry period for testing has been extended to three years as opposed to the previously stated two years in BS EN 287-1: 2011. According to ‘Code a Weld’, it will become mandatory for BS EN ISO 9606-1: 2013 to be in use no later than the end of March 2014. BS EN ISO 9717:2013 Metallic and other inorganic coatings. Phosphate conversion coating of metals. This is a new standard for coating metals. Phosphate conversion coatings are applied to ferrous metals, aluminium, zinc and their alloys (including zinc- and zinc-alloy-plated steel, cadmium and their alloys) either as an end finish or as an intermediate layer for other coatings. For further details, see www.shop.bsigroup.com and search BS EN ISO 9606-1:2013.

National Apprenticeship Week

This year’s National Apprenticeship Week in the UK will be held from 3-7 March 2014. National Apprenticeship Week is co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy. The objectives of National Apprenticeship Week 2014 are to

increase awareness, understanding and demand for apprenticeships; celebrate apprenticeship talent, skills, achievements and successes plus promote all apprenticeship levels and progression routes, including traineeships. If a UK business employs up to 1000 employees and is interested in recruiting a young apprentice it could be eligible to receive a £1,500 grant. Further details and toolkit resources can be found on http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/awards/apprenticeship-week- 2014/supporting-resources.aspx
