WELCOME TO 2014

I HOPE 2013 was a successful year for you. As we move into 2014, firstly I'd like to wish our readers a Happy New Year. It is traditionally the time to make resolutions. However, I tend not to make New Year resolutions. If it takes nothing more than a date to decide to do something different, then why not make that resolution at any time and not delay until 1st

January to start working on it? If you

perceive something as being possible and a challenge, then set the objective, go for it and aim to meet that objective. I’m certainly looking forward to the MACH exhibition at the NEC from 7-11 April

2014 (please see our MACH review on page 22). This event is certainly one for your calendar. Here, once more, many AWD members will be exhibiting in the “Welding World” Village which brings together welding distributors, manufacturers, wholesalers and service providers all demonstrating their excellence across the world of welding. For more details, please email exhibitions@AWD.org.uk. As we go to press, I’m pleased to hear that extra spaces have been made available

due to the success of the Village. I am also pleased to confirm that the AWD exclusive lounge is again available for AWD members to use, providing a great place to meet, network or even take a break from the pace of the exhibition. This year, our AGM will coincide with MACH, as we realise that many members will be in the Midlands for this exhibition. Booking details for members will follow in due course. Over 2014 we will be continuing the excellent work across the different AWD committees. These are: Member Benefits Committee; Education and Training Committee; Product Safety and Training Committee and the relatively new Occupational Health and Safety Group. Collectively, these groups ensure that welding is promoted as an attractive and safe industry and that standards across education, products and well-being are maintained to a positive level. We always welcome members to these committees and, if you would like to know more, please do not hesitate to contact me (at the email address below) as we try and ensure that we encompass the widest view possible to represent the welding industry. We are also in the final stages of planning our next series of Fume Focus seminars – these events have reached over 300 delegates over recent years and offer practical ways to improve the environmental conditions of those who are potentially exposed by welding fumes. More details of these events will follow shortly and look out for updates on the AWD website www.AWD.org.uk. We will also be arranging a national networking event for members in

2014. Our email bulletins will be forwarded to members providing updates and the AWD website is a good way to check for the latest events. If you are not a member of the AWD, then it is never too late to join. To

find out more about the benefits, how you can get involved and about the calendar of events, please contact the AWD on tel: +44 (0)1952 290036 or email membership@AWD.org.uk. Finally, let me wish you all a Happy New Year and I look forward to

meeting many of our readers again over the course of the year. If you have any comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to email me at national.chairman@AWD.org.uk.

Weencompass the widest view possible to represent the welding industry
