CONSIDERING A NEW GUN DOG?
YOU MAY NOT be aware that many gun dog breeds can suff er from inherited diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as inherited eye diseases. It is therefore essential to ask to see hip and elbow dysplasia screening results, and a current certifi cate of eye examination from the Canine Health Schemes when choosing your next gun dog. The British Veterinary Association and the
Kennel Club jointly run the Canine Health Schemes with the aim of reducing the occurrence and severity of inherited diseases to improve dog health and welfare. The schemes, including the Hip and Elbow
Dysplasia Schemes and the Eye Scheme, allow breeders to screen dogs for a range of inherited conditions. The results from the schemes can then be used by owners and breeders to make informed decisions to help produce healthier puppies and work towards eliminating debilitating inherited conditions for good. Evidence shows a steady reduction in the
incidence and severity of hip and elbow dysplasia when used in responsible breeding programmes. Examination under the Eye Scheme can also identify common non-inherited diseases of the eye that may need treatment. “The gun dog breeders I deal with who
consistently use the Canine Health Schemes can develop lines free of debilitating conditions which often require constant medication or major surgery for the dogs to have any quality of life,” explains Robin Hargreaves BVSc MRCVS Small Animal Director, Stanley House Veterinary Group. Screening for inherited diseases is essential
for all dogs used in breeding. When choosing a dog, you should ask to see the Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Scheme results and a current certifi cate of eye examination.
