ere at The Countryside Experience we laud all things country, so we’re ignoring the

oft-celebrated cultural delights of the city, and focusing instead on art created in Britain’s green and pleasant lands. Britain’s country artists off er some unique work and here we focus on – moving from Dorset to Scotland (via Suff olk) – Simon Gudgeon, Ben Hoskyns and Sam MacDonald, examining their inspirations and looking at how you can see their work for yourself. Despite his enviable success, he is modest when talking about his desire to capture the aesthetic beauty of saltwater game fi sh, comparing it to the pursuit of a grand slam as “improbable but very rewarding”. His work has been cast far and wide. It can be

seen at the House of Bruar, just north of Pitlochry, Scotland and at Lympstone Manor, Exmouth. Pallington in Dorset is where Simon Gudgeon’s

varied and fascinating sculptures are on display at Sculpture by the Lakes (sculpturebythelakes.co.uk), a 26-acre landscaped park painstakingly designed to create a perfect marriage of the aesthetics of each artwork with its surroundings. What could be a better antidote to the white-walled sterility of most art galleries than viewing Gudgeon’s works against the beautiful backdrop of Dorset? Famous for his depictions of birds in fl ight, Gudgeon’s sculptures are borne from “a shape, a movement, or an emotion” entering his mind. Due
