F CONSIDERING THE COUNTRYSIDE ◀ Cont nued from p31

off er would go a long way to keeping the British countryside healthy and open to all.

ESTATE MANAGEMENT However, it is not just conservation charities who are working towards protecting our countryside for future generations; estate owners are also doing their utmost to ensure their estates are well- managed and open for the public to enjoy. One organisation well versed in the work

estate owners do is the Countryside Alliance (countryside-alliance.org) and it is their belief the hard work of estate owners is not given enough credit. “We promote the conservation work of the gamekeepers and farmers who are our members, and campaign for the rural activities, like shooting, that pay for it. Almost every inch of rural Britain is managed, so it should be no surprise that the vast majority of conservation is undertaken by people in the working countryside,” explains Liam Stokes, head of shooting at the Countryside Alliance. And it is shooting which is – some might think

paradoxically – doing a lot for the upkeep of the countryside. “Game shooters actively manage nearly two million hectares for conservation and spend 3.9 million days and £250 million undertaking practical conservation every year.

GROWING WILDFLOWERS

BRIGHT SEEDS IS a pioneer in re-establishing native meadow species into our natural habitat. Using a specialised brush-harvesting technique, it can replicate wildfl ower meadows on farms, golf courses – and in your own garden. To purchase your wildfl ower seeds, visit brightwildfl ower.co.uk

Ugbrooke House has a

fascinating history

The humane control of common predators undertaken by gamekeepers is vital to the conservation of rare ground nesting birds,” says Stokes. “We have a globally-signifi cant population of endangered curlew in this country, and they breed three times more successfully on land subject to legal predator control. If we want wildlife to infuse our countryside, rather than being confi ned to designated nature reserves, we need to support the eff orts of our farmers and gamekeepers.” This is a sentiment echoed by Alexander

Cliff ord, manager of the Ugbrooke Park Estate (ugbrooke.co.uk) in Devon, who understands the importance of keeping his famous grounds well-kept and open to the public. “It goes without

saying that Ugbrooke Park is such a huge team eff ort to maintain, not only during the shooting

season, but also in the year-long preparation for the shooting

season,” says Cliff ord. “Within the game crops, we plant wild bird mixes to encourage wild bird species and other fl ora and fauna, as well as have ongoing

programmes of indigenous tree planting to ensure we replenish the woods with the natural lifecycle of trees across the estate. Unlike a lot of other shoots, we breed our own birds from collecting the eggs right

through to releasing the birds back into the woods at the start of the season.”

And after all this hard

covering 900 years, originally featuring in the Domesday book of 1086, and remains the private home of the Clifford family

work, Alexander is keen on sharing his stunning estate with those who wish to see it, opening the doors to the public for shooting days, private functions and beyond. “We are keen to share the beauty and history of the 300-year-old parkland designed by Capability Brown with the public, hence we are open in the summer when it is at its fi nest, and are available to book privately for shooting parties from October to February,” he adds. “We take our duty as custodians of Ugbrooke

Park very seriously; on one hand protecting the breathtaking landscape, but also being realistic about the commercial requirements to ensure there is still an estate for future generations to enjoy. It is a fi ne line to walk and is diff erent for every estate, but we try to ensure every decision we make is the best one for the future.” C

SOURCE HEAT PUMP Air source heat pumps have recently become a popular alternat ve for homeowners upgrading their heat ng systems

WITH CONSIDERABLY LOWER running costs in comparison to traditional boilers and other renewable appliances, along with a simple installation process, it’s easy to see why air source heat pumps are so popular. Ben Morris of Global Energy Systems, leading

UK Manufacturer of air source heat pumps explains “Here at Global we work closely with our clients to ensure they get the best heating system for their home. We accurately size the heat pump from our range in order to deliver the best savings over current heating systems, while still delivering comfortable hot water and central heating all year round.”

PICTURED: This recently renovated Lancashire manor with no access to mains gas was spending in excess of £4,000 a year running an oil boiler to heat the property. The owner knew that he needed to fi nd a solution that would see large savings. After comparing products, installation costs and savings between a number of different technologies, he found that

32 THE COUNTRYSIDE EXPERIENCE

integrating a Global Energy Systems Caernarfon air source heat pump into the current heating system was the most economical choice. Since the installation in spring 2016, owner Paul

Biddlecombe has seen huge savings.“I’m extremely pleased I decided to go with Global Energy Systems air source heat pumps, the savings so far have been incredible and the heat pump’s performance is exceeding all expectations.” The air source heat pump alone has met all his families heating and hot water needs all year, making the oil boiler redundant. Along with the savings, Global Energy Systems

heat pumps are eligible to receive payments from a Government grant. Over the past year, with initial savings of over 60%, Paul has also received £1,670 in payments. This has provided him with a estimated two and a half year pay- back on the purchase of the air source heat pump and an overall saving in excess of £4,000 a year. The government grant (RHI) will run on this property for seven years leading to a total payment just short of £10,000.
