COUNTRY HOME & STYLE ◀ Cont nued from p41

which can have their pros and cons. “The biggest danger with country house decorating is that there seems to be no stop button,” says William. “I think, in general, country-style decorating is more about a family, or a couple, and much less appealing to somebody who is going to buy a country pad, and then be there alone.” When it comes to decoration choices and

capturing that essence of the countryside, William is clear on his style, infl uences and design terms which he utilises: “I would also say that if you have one foot in the past and one foot in tomorrow you will probably fi nd the design of today. A lot of the work that I do uses historical reference, but it is freshened and illuminated, making it more useful for today’s way of life.” And, putting design factors to one side for the moment, it is the personal element that really helps

“Preferably you have to know the people you are

working with on a fairly honest and intimate level, particularly in the countryside. It’s so important to understand the diff erences between being by the coast or up a mountain, or in the middle of a fi eld or even at the edge of a country town.” When it comes to the fi ner points of country

home and style William believes that a synergistic approach is best – even down to the right moment when to take a step back. “I think that if somebody is employing you as an eye then it would be very unfortunate not to give them the benefi t of your experience right across the board.

want to know an awful lot about them before I even start to entertain the idea of working together,” says William. “Also, I think once you have had that conversation, you get a much clearer idea as to whether you will be the designer that is fi t for their purpose.”

when I leave, it is their house and not mine and therefore if there are areas they fi nd too personal for a designer to be involved in – it could be something as simple as bed linen – then I would not give any input.” And it is not just the interiors of country homes

that are so appealing to our nature; instead it is the wider backdrop in which they are situated – the countryside itself. “Of course, the beautiful thing about the countryside is that it is where we are from, and to some extent, where we belong; it’s good for our nature,” says William. “When I was ill with cancer I found the countryside to be very healing and at the beginning of the illness I found that working on a countryside project soothed me.”

William’s new book ‘Blue and White and Other Stories’ will be available from Cico Books mid-September.
