Atkinson Photography and Safaris SOUTH AFRICA
Atkinson Photography and Safaris is run by Grant and Helena Atkinson, a husband and wife team who are based in South Africa. They share a background in and strong passion for the conservation and eco-tourism industry. Before founding Atkinson Photography and Safaris, Grant worked as a guide in Botswana for more than 10 years. Helena also worked in Botswana, in the community conservation field, at the same time as developing wildlife conservation part of her portfolio. Their images of wildlife have appeared in
many magazines, including African Birdlife and National Geographic Kids, to name just a couple. As photographic trip leaders, they put a strong emphasis on helping their clients to take better pictures. Group sizes are limited to a maximum of six photographers, and locations are carefully selected in order to facilitate going off-road to get closer to subjects. Atkinson Photography and Safaris only works with highly experienced local guides and trackers and aims to maximise the time participants have with subject animals
by carefully predicting the behaviour and movement of wildlife. Photo safari destinations offered by the
company are varied; they include the Okavango Delta in Botswana; the Mara Conservancies in Kenya; Patagonia in Chile; the Pantanal in Brazil; and Bandhavgarh in India. All these locations are home to iconic predators like lions, leopards, wild dog, jaguars and tigers. Images are taken from four-wheel-drive
vehicles and boats optimised for photography, and on foot whenever possible. Photo safaris are held in private concessions or areas with lower numbers of other visitors, as well as national parks and reserves. They’re run in partnership with local camps that have logistic support in place and provide high-quality accommodation, meals and transport. Atkinson Photography and Safaris has a high
percentage of repeat clients, testimony to its successful formula of combining wildlife and photographic know-how with an understanding of client needs and a passion for wild places.
