One&Only: Gorilla’s Nest and Nyungwe House GISAKURA AND RUHENGERI, RWANDA
Landlocked Rwanda lies within the Great Rift Valley of Central Africa. Synonymous with gorilla adventures, this compact country packs a punch when it comes to travel experiences — and these two properties are the best places to enjoy it
ONE&ONLY GORILLA’S NEST One&Only Gorilla’s Nest is a new jungle sanctuary deep within a eucalyptus forest in Rwanda. In the foothills of the Virunga Mountains, this luxury resort ‘makes the magical possible’, as guests enjoy encounters with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This haven of tranquillity — which blends seamlessly into the environment — has 14 luxury rooms and seven suites. As home to the highest number of natural mountain gorillas in the wild, this is the perfect retreat after a day trekking. From the deck of each private lodge, guests
can enjoy a front-row seat to myriad wildlife, from monkeys to exotic birds, in front of a majestic backdrop of five dormant volcanoes. The jungle-chic cottages and suites have been designed to frame nature and seamlessly blend with their surroundings. The decor has a contemporary African feel.
Local materials and art have been used where possible, including local volcanic rock and

touches of black and white Rwandan Imigongo patterns. Guests are spoilt for choice when it comes
to food options, too. Spend an evening in Jack Hanna’s cottage with interactive cooking classes led by the executive chef, lounge by the pool, and then spend evenings by the firepit gazing up at the stars. With a plentiful vegetable garden, exceptional local providers and talented chefs, the cuisine is ‘born of Rwanda and inspired by the world’. The menu of field-to-fork food is both seasonal and organic. The spa is a secluded sanctuary offering
benefit-driven holistic treatments that harness the power of African botanicals to soothe the body, mind, and spirit — daily yoga and Pilates sessions are also popular with guests. During a stay here, take part in golden monkey tracking, hike to Crater Lake, and explore the Musanze Cave. Guests also have the opportunity to hike to the resting place of conservationist Dian Fossey, known for her work with the mountain gorillas.
ONE&ONLY NYUNGWE HOUSE One&Only Nyungwe House is an idyllic eco- retreat in an ancient rainforest, within the lush green expanse of a working tea plantation. The hotel offers its guests once-in-a-lifetime experiences in the heart of magical Rwanda. Being at one with nature sits hand-in-hand with an ethos of wellbeing, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the natural world. One&Only Nyungwe House consists of
23 luxury rooms and suites situated in eight stunning wooden villas designed to frame nature, with exceptional views of the Nyungwe National Park. Newly extended private decks offer a secluded haven to watch wildlife, while interiors are comprised of locally made textiles and artwork. Home-cooked breakfasts and on-the-go
lunches and picnics are all prepared by talented local chefs. All meals are created using fresh organic ingredients direct from the chef’s garden and food is inspired by traditional Rwandan
dishes. Aperitifs and snacks are always available, and the sound of the rainforest gives every meal a delightfully romantic edge. One&Only Nyungwe House is renowned for
being an excellent wellbeing retreat. Guests can indulge in signature treatments at The Wellness Center and One&Only Spa, which offers an extensive array of luxury spa treatments, meditation, yoga, Pilates and fitness training. Each unique spa treatment combines the wisdom of traditional holistic therapies and the scientific power of the purest natural ingredients. The menu offers treatments harnessing the essence of Africa and include Forest Awakening, Nyungwe Ritual and Fire Ritual treatments. In this region of Rwanda there are 13 different
species of primate, including chimpanzee, and an impressive 275 bird species, from the gabar goshawk to the great blue turaco. Guests can take part in on-resort activities such as mountain biking and an African Tea Ceremony. Wild encounters range from incredibly rare primates and reptiles, to butterflies, exotic birds, and indigenous flora.
RWANDA Rwanda extends from dense rainforests to shimmering lakes and the capital of Kigali, but nowhere are the mountains more breath-taking than the Virunga volcanoes, home of the last remaining mountain gorillas. To the south lies the Nyungwe National Park and to the east, the rolling plains of Akagera, another hotspot for birdwatchers, while the west is known for the shimmering waters of Lake Kivu.
