THE STORY OF LUTTRELLSTOWN Internationally renowned as one of the most striking castles in Ireland, Luttrellstown takes its name from the Luttrell family, who held the estate for more than 300 years until 1811. Apart from a short break during Cromwellian times, the family retained their influential position and continued to act as responsible members of the aristocracy for several hundred years. The family and their magnificent castle became known as an opulent venue famous for its gracious hospitality and entertainment. But unfortunately, the family line became extinct following the death of John Luttrell, 3rd Earl of Carhampton, in 1829. Subsequently, a wealthy

took place between the 1910s and 1950s under the ownership of Aileen Plunket (nee Guinness) a member of the world-famous Guinness family. During that time, parts of the castle’s interior, particularly the Van Stry Ballroom and the Kentian Room were remodelled in Baroque and Georgian style, which harmonise perfectly with the remainder of the interior scheme. Aileen was a society hostess and one of the three ‘Guinness Golden Girls’ — alongside her sisters Maureen and Oonagh — who were icons in the 1920s and 1930s. The castle was also renowned as one of the best places to party in Dublin at the time — Aileen even installed a bar and nightclub.
