Peru is often associated with its archaeological sites, yet some of its richest stories are found within its cities. The Ananay Collection comprises five heritage
hotels across these three cities, each occupying a carefully restored historic building. Palacio Guaqui is the collection’s home in Arequipa. Set within the city’s Unesco World Heritage-listed historic centre, the property occupies an 18th-century mansion built from the white volcanic sillar stone that defines Arequipa’s distinctive character. Its restoration preserved vaulted ceilings, carved arcades and spacious courtyards, allowing the building’s original architecture to remain intact while welcoming contemporary travellers. The surrounding neighbourhood is best explored
on foot. From Palacio Guaqui, guests can wander to Plaza de Armas, museums, markets and traditional picanterías (lunchtime restaurants), where recipes and techniques have been preserved for generations.
Beyond the city, the volcanoes Misti, Chachani
and Pichu Pichu rise, their peaks long revered within the Andean world. These mountains also formed part of the Inca sacred landscape. Their volcanic origins have also shaped the city itself, providing the white sillar stone used to build many of Arequipa’s historic churches, monasteries and mansions, including Palacio Guaqui.
