Casa Badú OAXACA, MEXICO
Mexico’s Oaxacan coast is a magnet for surfers chasing the powerful waves of the Pacific, but beside the crashing breakers lies Puerto Escondido — a town rich in culture that should be discovered at a comfortable pace and without an itinerary. Situated in the town’s laid-back Tamarindos neighbourhood, Casa Badú encapsulates the spirit of the region by combining a well-designed guesthouse with a boutique coastal hotel. The property — named after the Zapotec word
for ‘child’ — has seven rooms, inviting guests to discover a style of travel shaped by the warm sea breeze, sun-soaked afternoons and spontaneous adventures. Brutalist architecture forms the backbone of the building, with exposed concrete and steel softened by bamboo and tropical plants. The contrast reflects its surroundings: rugged yet relaxed, refined but informal. No two rooms are alike — each space is designed
to suit a different rhythm of travel, whether it’s resting for a week or returning spattered with salt after a day at sea. The newly renovated rooftop terrace is the heart of the property, featuring a
panoramic ocean-facing pool and a lounge area that’s perfect for catching the afternoon breeze rolling in from Zicatela — the world-famous surfing beach only metres away. The atmosphere feels welcoming throughout Casa Badú; it’s more like a home than a hotel. During migration season, humpback whales can
occasionally be spotted offshore, while green and black iguanas perch on the property’s ledges and relax in the heat of the sun. A short walk away, Mercado Zicatela is one of
Oaxaca’s most scenic markets. Here, the smoky smell of tlayudas — a Oaxacan dish consisting of a crispy tortilla base layered with refried beans and other savoury toppings — mixes with the scent of fresh seafood and local mezcal. In Puerto Escondido, big-game fishing is a
crucial part of the local culture. Guests can spend the day at sea catching mahi-mahi, marlin or sailfish. Back at Casa Badú, Patio — the property’s new restaurant opening in August — will prepare the catch, accompanied by seasonal ingredients from nearby markets.
DON’T MISS Head out on a dawn fishing trip, then return to Casa Badú so that Patio’s chef can turn the day’s catch into a delicious lunch
