Casa Alebrije MEXICO CITY, MEXICO
Tucked down a quiet cul-de-sac in the historic heart of Coyoacán, Casa Alebrije is a seven-room sanctuary where the spiritual heritage of Oaxaca’s ancient Zapotec civilisation meets the warmth of modern Mexican hospitality. The hotel takes its name from the alebrijes: fantastical, vividly painted spirit creatures that preside over each of its individually designed rooms. Every alebrije in the hotel is hand-carved locally
from copal, a wood sacred to the Zapotec people, before being meticulously painted with intricate symbols representing protection, fertility and spirituality. The tradition draws on a belief born in the sacred hilltop city of Monte Albán: that tonas and nahuales — spirit animals assigned at birth according to the Zapotec calendar — guide and protect every person throughout their life. At Casa Alebrije, these guardians are reimagined
as travelling companions, each room’s creature quietly watching over guests as they discover the capital. Fittingly, the story comes full circle here: alebrijes were first dreamt up in Mexico City itself in the 1930s, when artisan Pedro Linares López
awoke from a fevered dream of impossible hybrid creatures. Oaxacan carvers later fused his vision with their tona traditions, and the hotel now returns these guardians to the city of their birth. No two rooms are alike. Each is a small gallery
of Mexican craftsmanship — handwoven rugs and cushions, vibrant colour palettes inspired by its resident alebrije — paired with luxury linens, air conditioning and, in some rooms, balconies overlooking the garden. That garden is the property’s other treasure:
an unexpected oasis of loungers, cafe tables and a bubbling whirlpool bath, offering stillness in a metropolis of more than eight million people. A 24-hour coffee station keeps freshly brewed drinks flowing, while in-room massages and personalised facials bring the spa experience to the privacy of each suite. Mornings begin with a complimentary breakfast
designed by the hotel’s chef, who reinvents traditional Mexican dishes alongside lighter continental options — the perfect fuel for exploring one of Mexico City’s most storied neighbourhoods.
