A new non-invasive technique for treating acid reflux

Promotional Content • Saturday 6th March 2021

A SMART way of looking after your health

T A

cid reflux, otherwise known as heartburn, is a chronic condition where stomach acid

passes into the oesophagus causing a variety of symptoms including pain and regurgitation. It affects approximately 20% of the

population, and although medication is usually successful in treating this condition, some patients with severe symptoms require surgery. Traditionally this would involve

major abdominal surgery, wrapping the stomach around the oesophagus. Although effective, this surgery has a number of side effects, which is why there’s increasing interest in less invasive approaches. STRETTA is

a new procedure involving inserting an endoscope

via the mouth, and applying radiof- requency therapy to strengthen the muscles around the bottom part of the oesophagus. Tis technique has the advantage of avoiding any inci- sions, and can even be done without the need for general anaesthesia. Professor Khan is a consultant

surgeon with a specialist interest in acid reflux and weight loss surgery. He’s one of the very few surgeons here in the UK that’s trained to offer STRETTA as part of his specialist anti-reflux service.
