A landmark ruling at the end of 2020 saw pollution recorded as a cause of death for the first time. If you’re concerned about air quality then consider investing in tech. Words: Helen Warwick
Air purification technology Art and scent interior specialist Sensed has teamed up with Scent Air to launch a new air purification system. ION Protect, set to take the UK by storm, has the ability to deactivate viral and bacterial particles indoors, including MRSA, norovirus and
E.coli. Te device works by releasing ions safely into the air, which disrupt the pathogen’s surface protein, rendering them inactive and reducing the spread of airborne pathogens.

purification system, look for a CADR (clean-air delivery rate) of at least 300, with a HEPA filter — avoid any that say ‘HEPA-like’ or ‘HEPA-type’ as this isn’t an industry standard.
The power of plants If you want to add some greenery into your home, then this might also have an effect on the air quality. Albeit not comparable to tech-aided air purification, certain plants can help detoxify the air in your living spaces — removing airborne toxins, dust and germs — while increasing oxygen. Here, Richard Cheshire, ‘Patch Plant doctor’ at online plant retailer Patch, reveals the best air-purifying house plants you need
in your life, starting with plants that are easy to care for and don’t need a great deal of light: “For a shaded spot, my top recommendation would be a snake plant. Tey’re almost impossible to kill — so long as you don’t overwater them — and are NASA recommended for their air-purifying qualities. Tey release oxygen at night. “Another great pick would be
Devil’s ivy, a fast-growing trailing plant, or a corn plant — in the summer months, you should see fairly fast growth from her if she gets some natural light on her leaves. “Te peace lily is another great
choice,” he adds. “She’s very easy to care for and is almost unkillable too. She may lose her flowers in a darker spot, but her dark green leaves should continue to look great.” Plants that need a little more care or
lots of natural light include anthurium and English ivy. “Anthurium produce vivid red flowers for up to 10 months of the year and they love bright, indirect light,” explains Richard. “Fast-growing English ivy is another great pick for a bright spot, while the parlour palm loves a sunny spot and she’s dead easy to care for as well.” Shop all of these options at
