Mr Janindra Warusavitarne B Med FRACS PhD is a consultant colorectal surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital, London, the national bowel hospital
r Warusavitarne relocated from Australia in 2010, when he was offered an appoint-
ment at this hospital, a national and international referral centre of excellence for intestinal and colorectal disorders. After completing his surgical
training, Janindra undertook full- time research (focusing on the genetics of colorectal cancer) and was awarded a PhD from the University of Sydney, Australia. He was a consultant surgeon in Sydney before he relocated to the UK. His major speciality interests
include intestinal rehabilitation surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, anal fistula, haemorrhoids, pelvic floor disorders, and colorectal cancer. He’s the lead surgeon for inflam-
matory bowel diseases at St Mark’s Hospital, London, and an honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College. Janindra is part of the executive team conducting the European Board qualification for colorectal surgery, and a visiting scientist to the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. In addi- tion, Janindra is the assistant chair of the education committee of the European Society of Coloproctology. on a regular basis and has developed many courses. Janindra is considered a key opinion
leader and innovator and some of his major innovations include the TASER procedure he developed together with Prof Brian Saunders and the modifica- tions to rectal prolapse surgery in the light of controversy surrounding the use of synthetic mesh in pelvic floor surgery. For the TASER procedure — which has resulted in many patients avoiding major bowel surgery for complex rectal polyps and — Janindra received an innovation award. He’s performed over 150 modified pelvic floor operations with no mesh-related issues and thus has gained a positive reputation among patient groups, in particular.
In addition, Janindra has
been a driver of minimally invasive surgery for anal fistula and haemor- rhoid surgery with a national and inter- national reputation for dealing with these conditions. He’s one the highest volume surgeons in the country performing ileoanal pouch surgery for ulcerative colitis, with very good outcomes for his innovative approach. Janindra has been part of many
working groups forming guidelines for managing Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Tis includes the European Crohn’s and colitis organ- isation (ECCO) guidelines and NICE guidelines. In addition, he also offers advice on technology appraisals of new procedures to NICE. Janindra is a keen researcher and has published over 130 papers, as well
as 11 book chapters and edited a book on ileoanal pouch surgery. He’s also written two books for patients with his nursing colleagues and these are now being used nationally and inter- nationally. Janindra has also delivered over 100 international and national lectures and is regarded as the go-to surgeon for some complex conditions. He rates very highly in patient satis-
faction appraisals and is praised for being a good listener who is empa- thetic and will go the extra mile to help his patients.
