MEET THE SURGEON RESEARCHER

Mr Mahi Muqit PhD FRCOphth is a consultant cataract and vitreoretinal surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. Mr Muqit is a leading Vitreoretinal Surgeon at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. His special interests are vitrectomy surgery, macular degeneration, complex cataract surgery, macular hole and retinal detachment surgery, and diabetic eye disease. He carried out clinical trials

that pioneered new, safer and efficient pattern scan Pascal laser techniques to prevent blindness in diabetic patients. He’s a leading expert on diabetic retinopathy and advises non-government agencies about designing innovative diabetic eye screening programmes in the developing world and assisted with development of the International Diabetic Eye Care Guidelines Mr Muqit was awarded a prestigious

National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) UK research grant in 2020 to investigate treatments for complex eye infections following eye surgery to prevent potential blindness. His research is for patient benefit.

Innovations of a retinal surgeon clinic in London

Pioneering research innovation Mr Muqit was the first surgeon to implant a new IRIS-2 type of bionic eye device at Moorfields Eye Hospital for three blind patients suffering from retinitis pigmentosa. He’ll be working with a French technology company and a team of EU surgeons to pioneer the use of the next-generation bionic eye system for blind patients suffering from age-related macular degener- ation. Tis landmark clinical trial is scheduled to start in 2021.

Save my central vision Central vision can be damaged by structural changes in the macula after the age of 45. Te macula is part of the retina (‘light-seeing layer’) at the back of the eye and is respon- sible for our central vision and colour vision. ‘Epiretinal membrane’ (scar

tissue) and ‘macula hole’ disrupt the fine detail of what we see, and objects and faces appear distorted and blurred. Reading and driving vision suffers, and vision can be disa- bling and colours washed out. With a ‘retinal detachment’ there’s a tear or hole present in the retina, and the retina peels away from the inside lining of the eyeball — this is an eye emergency. All these eye conditions can cause the central vision to suffer.

One-stop advanced macular hole surgery? Combined cataract and vitrectomy surgery can close the hole with success rates of 90-95%, with eye recovery within three to four weeks. Minimal face-down posturing is required after surgery, and this ensures patients can walk outdoors and maintain some independence and normality rapidly after their operation.

Cutting-edge macular and retinal surgery Mr Muqit works with groundbreaking eye treatment modalities and mini- mally invasive surgery techniques to provide superior visual outcomes whilst minimising risk. Te latest

‘minimally invasive vitrectomy surgery’ (MIVS) technique is used to remove the vitreous gel with self- sealing micro-incisions. Surgery

is

painless, takes around 20-30 minutes and the recovery after MIVS is fast with a swift return to normal life. For sight-threatening conditions

like retinal detachments, Mr Muqit runs a daily emergency surgery clinic in London. His ‘micro-keyhole’ vitrec- tomy surgery technique ensures complications are minimised and provides patients a greater likeli- hood of preserving vision. Te success rates for MIVS retinal detachment surgery are over 90%, and vision can be preserved following surgery.
