Save on a group adventure in Indico

Escaping the rat race A

t age 33, Sina Reischauer found herself with her nose in a stranger’s armpit on

the Victoria Line during rush hour, wondering whether this was the life she had dreamt of. She’d been working in a stable office job for years. Was that it, until retirement? Realising she wanted to experience more in her life, Sina decided to make a radical change. She quit her job, sold her belongings

and bought a one-way ticket out of town. “I didn’t have a plan—my idea was to keep on travelling until I ran out of energy or money!” she laughs. Her travels took her across Asia and Europe for a year—watching the sun rise over the Dead Sea from a tent in Israel, following the cherry blossoms through Japan. Making friends on the road was easy in most countries— hostel kitchens were melting pots. However, Sina explains, “It’s hard to meet people over 30 when travelling. Once you’re past the worn mattresses of party dorms and enjoy the comfort of hotels, it gets harder to meet other travellers. I wanted to talk to people who could relate to the bigger ques- tions going round my mind—should I

brave a complete career change? With friends getting married and having babies, did I want to ‘settle down’?” Sure that other travellers in their

30s and 40s also wanted to connect, Sina decided to tackle the problem head on. She created Indico Travels, a company that brings people in that life stage together to explore destinations around the world in small groups. “I remember our first tour, a

two-week trip in Colombia. It was so special to dive into Medellín’s noto- rious Comuna 13 with locals, and learn to cook traditional dishes with fishermen’s wives. As a solo trav- eller, I would never have ventured so deep into Colombia’s communities”, Sina says. Since that first tour, Indico Travels

has taken groups to hike in the Himalayas, to stay with tribes in rural Vietnam, and to taste wines in Portugal, with every tour designed specifically for travellers in their 30s and 40s. “We love mixing unforgettable

adventures—for example, an over- night stay in a tree house—with cultural deep dives and a sprinkle

of ‘treat yourself ’”, Sina explains. “But what I also love is that we’re connecting like-minded people that would otherwise not have met. We’ve seen deep friendships develop, and some travellers have even become each other’s go-to person. People who met on our tours have supported each other through break-ups, through career changes, others have explored new countries together. It’s like the trip they took with us was a catalyst for other great things in their lives. Tat’s so exciting to me”. She still gets a buzz out of seeing

groups beaming under the Northern Lights or sharing momo dumplings with Nepalis. “It’s so rewarding to help people explore places they may not have discovered otherwise”, Sina says. “And as for me, I have found the adventure I was seeking those years ago on the Victoria line!”
