Belaying, especially at the top, is a natural opportunity for active meditation. The enforced siting, combined with post-lead-I-didn’t-die euphoria, lends itself to heightened awareness.

making it a good experience for them. Something shared. Co-created. Mutually witnessed. Belaying ties us together physically, metaphorically and emotionally. With familiar partners, no one needs to speak about the process. They top out, we chat about the route, the conditions, the seals. And while we do this, we’re pulling the ropes through, retrieving gear, coiling in sync. Automatically and happily. It still fills me with delight, this tiny-team solicitude. On occasions, when not climbing, I’ve taken myself to cliffs and sat down, alone, at the finishing stance of a familiar route. But the alchemy doesn’t happen. Where is the glory, the specialness? It doesn’t kick in for me without the lead. I am still reliant on the cocktail of self-made drugs – adrenaline, endorphins, dopamine, serotonin – to fully revel in the cliff-top polaroid vividness of living. But more than that, it doesn’t trigger for me without a partner with whom to share the care and gratitude. And if I’m not tied in to a webbing of slings and nuts and cams, I get up and walk away without investing enough of my soul. Maybe when I’m older, I’ll be able to sit in the landscape and be, without climbing at all. Something to look forward to, perhaps.
