Golf in Gran Canaria Scores Again!

November rain for a sun-drenched golfing retreat in Gran Canaria...
LEAVING behind a dreary November day in Belfast, we arrived, with a spring in our step, to the sun-drenched island of Gran Canaria. Seven days of relaxation and four rounds of golf in shorts and tee shirts – what was there not to like! We stayed at the Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity - located high in the
valley beyond Maspalomas. The hotel is surrounded by two beautifully landscaped golf courses – the 18 hole Old Course and the 9 hole New Course – designed in a desert setting, landscaped with palm trees, oasis of water and an abundance of indigenous flowering plants. This was our third visit to the Salobre Hotel and as a returning guest says, “Salobre is like a slipper – it just fits!” For a golfer, the pro shop and golf operation team are on site and seamlessly prepare you for your round. Golf buggies / driving range / practice areas are all easily accessible.
The two courses offer enjoyable but challenging golf.
Be prepared for high
the fairways are carved into the rocky mountainside, look out for the bounces off the rock face which can either be to your advantage – back onto the middle of the fairway or a ball lost forever!! However, the super views over the valley and down to the Ocean makes each round special and easier to deal with a disappointing drive or a short approach shot. We also treated ourselves to playing at Anfi Tauro along the coast near Mogan. Here the course sweeps down to the sea and has some tricky holes which challenge your chipping and putting skills. Again, the course is beautifully maintained and as one golfer said – ‘It is like playing a course in Arizona, but in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.” Great to play and an excellent visitor experience. Having heard great reports about Meloneras Golf Course, from a Norwegian golfer we had played with at Salobre, we called in to see the set up.

is very much
part of the golf development programme,
with courses
being returned to a desert- like setup 100% recycled water is used for irrigation and the planting of indigenous vegetation is featured on the courses. With only a four and a half hour flight from Belfast
– it does make winter golf very attractive, as we head into the dark days of January!
It has nine holes with
mountain views and nine holes with Ocean views – three of which play right alongside the Ocean and has shades of the challenges of Old Head, in Kinsale, only with warm sunshine and no wind! Golf in Gran Canaria is big business and the hotels and courses take their guests and golfers seriously.
Golf
packages and tee times are well organized and the green fees are reasonable with the courses well set up and maintained.
