British travellers
heading to Europe will be faced with additional requirements for entry as the EU implements what it describes as “the most modern
digital border
management system in the world.”
Following the UK’s decision to exit the European Union,
Boris Johnson’s administration negotiated for British travellers to be classified as “third- country nationals,”
which
comes with various restrictions. Currently,
British passport
holders are required to have their travel documents checked and stamped. But now, the European Union
is set to introduce an “entry- exit system” (EES), which will track the movements of non- EU visitors within the Schengen Area, which includes all EU countries except Cyprus and
Ireland, along with Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland. The new scheme will see an end to passport stamping, however now every traveller will, in theory, need to be fingerprinted and submit a facial biometric. If the rollout of the EES proceeds without issues, the Electronic Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is set to launch six months later, in May 2025. This new phase in enhancing border controls introduces an online permit system similar
to the US ESTA scheme, but at a lower cost of €7 (£6) and with a longer validity of three years. Although the ETIAS scheme is set to launch in May 2025, a six-month grace period will be provided. This means that it won’t be mandatory for prospective UK visitors to apply online for entry permission to the Schengen Area until at least November 2025. The Entry-Exit System (EES) is an automated IT framework for the Schengen Area.
