FUNGI SPECTACLE Fabulous fungi
Summer’s bright blooms may have disappeared from the meadows but as we head into autumn there’s a new eye-catching interest to enjoy: fungi. From copious cups to colourful corals, fungi come in many curious shapes and sizes – and it’s so easy to find throughout our woodlands and grasslands. Easily overlooked, fungi are hugely important for food, medicine and recycling organic material, but for now, why not head out for a walk and simply enjoy spotting it this autumn.
SEE THEM THIS AUTUMN Bowness-on-Solway Nature Reserve Look out for the fungi of fairytales, the fly agaric, at this former gravel quarry that’s been recolonised by wildlife. Brown Robin Nature Reserve Grange-over-Sands. A limestone woodland that’s great for waxcaps and the tiny eyelash fungus. Cliburn Moss Nature Reserve (Natural England), near Penrith. A fantastic woodland for bovine bolete and a range of russula species.
