Busy week for the Royal Family

We were delighted to have not one, but two royal visits in the middle of June. Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met the Trust’s staff and volunteers in Paterdale, where they took a short walk with children from Paterdale CofE School to take in one of the Lake District’s beautiful vistas from Paterdale. This was an opportunity to talk about

wildlife conservation issues impacting Cumbria, as well as a chance to take in some of our stunning views. A few days later, staff at South Walney Nature Reserve and our Chair John Farmer welcomed His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex, who officially opened the new visitor cabin. The Earl also met and talked to staff and children from South Walney Infant and Nursery School

Over 200m of cliff- side vegetation was scorched by wildfire at Humphrey Head Nature Reserve

MPs urged to act REGIONAL Humphrey Head fire

Humphrey Head Nature Reserve suffered a wildfire on Saturday 15 June. The fire brigade was called out early on Saturday evening and firefighters were on the scene for around three hours. The fire, which is suspected to have been started maliciously, burned dry vegetation on the cliff face towards the southern end of the head. Over 200m burned before the fire was bought under control. the damage will not be known for a while as staff will need to see how quickly the burnt areas regenerate. Reserves Officer Pete Jones said: “We were very lucky the fire did not cause more damage. Although the weather was dry at the time, the vegetation was not as dry as this time last year. Some of the flowering plants on the cliffs have been lost, so we will have to see how quickly they come back.”

On 26 June 2019, Trust staff and supporters were among the 12,000 people who travelled to Westminster to take part in the largest mass lobby Parliament has ever seen. The 300 MPs who met their constituents, including five MPs from Cumbria, were asked to take action for climate and wildlife, and urged to pass a strong Environment Bill.
