Welcome

Fantastic news for MCZs This summer’s most momentous and

welcome news was the announcement that six new Marine Conservation Zones have been created in the Irish Sea, two of which have been added to the local network, making a total of five in Cumbria. Hooray and well done

to Defra and the Government – this leaves a couple more to designate! See page 15 for more details. This is brilliant news, the significance of which cannot be

overstated. I’m very excited because some important parts of the wildlife-depleted Irish Sea will now be protected, and this brings the prospect of wider recovery several giant steps closer – if we can get their management right. I’m also really excited because this represents the

culmination of many years of hard work by Trust volunteers, staff and by you, our members and supporters. I’m proud of everyone who wrote Wave of Support leters – and met and emailed their MPs to make the case for Marine Conservation Zones. It’s really encouraging that when presented with the evidence and compelling arguments, politicians can be persuaded to do the right thing for wildlife. It gives me great optimism that, as we leave the European

Union, we can make an irresistible case to politicians to take this generational opportunity to put nature into recovery and bring our wildlife back. There is an urgent need for MPs to pass a meaningful Environment Act alongside effective Fisheries and Agriculture Acts – not just to offer a beter future for wildlife but also for people, farmers and fishermen. Thank you again for supporting Cumbria’s precious wildlife and wild places.
