This comes at a critical
juncture, as over the next decade the last of the Baby-Boomers will be retiring.

as well as upperclassmen from high schools local to exhibitors, were invited to attend. The event was conducted on the virtual platform, the Networking
ICI’s
and Event Campus, and was attended by four trade associations, three universities and several foundry and supplier members.

the presentation materials previously mentioned, the ICI also has process videos, which may be streamed from the Members-Only area of the ICI website, and
a downloadable brochure that
when printed makes an attractive tri-fold handout. The Institute also offers a classroom
support kit, to provide students with a more tactile exposure to the industry. The kit comes ready to travel in a hard-shell roller board case, and contains samples of wax, shell and alloy raw materials, an injected and a printed pattern, cut away shell samples before and after dewax, a post-cast shell, and metal samples from knock out to finished product, all of the same part. The kit is available with or without shell
pattern, and casting samples
for those foundries preferring to use products from their own foundry. Both the Investment Casting Institute and the Cast Metals Federation utilize one of these kits in classroom demonstrations. These kits are available for purchase from the ICI.
First Steps Towards Structured Mentorship From September 13 through the 17th, in collaboration with the Foundry Educational Foundation, the ICI hosted Metal-Casting Mentorship Week, a back-to-school event for high school upperclassmen and college students. This program was designed to offer students an opportunity to learn about our industry and its career offerings. The other North American trade associations and their members were invited to exhibit at no charge. Students from FEF and ICI Member universities,

in which the ICI played a leadership role in, and hopefully it won’t be the last. Due to the pandemic the event was conducted virtually, but in normal times we envision the event being conducted regionally.

Confronted with the current labor crisis, the ICI recognizes the importance of establishing a well laid out, formalized mentorship program. This is where the Institute needs your help. To be effective, a complete review of all student outreach materials and programs should be conducted. Areas of weakness need to be highlighted and an action plan must be developed to support mentorship in our schools. This is clearly a major undertaking, but unless a first step is taken, the labor situation will only worsen. So, this is where you come in, participating on an ad hoc committee to address how we evolve our student outreach program into a well-structured, cohesive mentorship program will help us achieve our goals. Shortly after the first of the year, the ICI will begin its evaluation of its student outreach tools to identify shortcomings and identify areas where new materials need to be developed.
Additionally,
the Institute will begin to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of the ICI, its Membership and the schools and universities of interest in better serving the needs of the industry and the
