TPM Converts Oil & Gas Latch Lock From Weldment To In- vestment Casting
A Latch Lock is part of a safety handle that is used on Oil & Gas Rigs. The latch allows the lock to be unlocked by rotating the handle. TPM’s customer originally fabricated this part by welding multiple pieces together, which was not only time-consuming, but left the part looking cosmetically unappealing with many weld marks and sharper corners than were desirable. TPM worked with the customer to understand the functionality desired in the part along with the desired cosmetic appearance, coming up with the design that you see today. Eliminating the welding saved countless hours of assembly to manufacture a single component and presented a very clean part for their customers. Additionally, use of the investment casting process enabled the integral casting of the part number via raised letters in a recessed pad. Taking this approach resulted in a 10-15% overall savings on the cost of the part. While the savings were nice, the speed to produce a part and present a more aesthetically pleasing component were more important to the customer. Overall, the customer is very happy with the part and the improvements gained through utilizing the investment casting process.
